BITS and PIECES

KNCU Rules and Regulations

A few issues need some attention here:

1. Registrations - At the start of the river season KNCU are always fairly relaxed about paddlers getting registered with their clubs for the season. But from the start of September start tightening up. So please guys and girls if you havnt paid your subs yet please do so immediatly or it's going to cost you an extra R50 to enter your next race and after that one your entry won't be accepted at all. "If you want to play the game you have to join the club"

2. Entry on the bank. Same story as above from now on. Bank entries R50 extra. Entry is easy, online with your credit card at www.kncu.co.za or at one of the following. Erics Canoe Shop, Kayak Centre, Natal Canoe Club, Popes Canoe Centre or GPS. Or of course if you don't mind the R50 extra - on the bank.

Students with student cards, please remember that you can enter at the PMB sports union or with Chris Muller in Durban at a junior rate, but only at those points.

3. Club Colours - race organisers are reporting problems with these at the pounds. Clubs are reported as not having stock and paddlers in some cases refusing to co-operate. Folks, this is a KNCU rule, please get organised and get your colours on for racing.

4. Paddling on a course on the day of a race. We had a couple of boats on the Dusi this Sunday in amongst the back paddlers taking advantage of the great water release for the Ngwenya race but not entered in the race. This is against the rules and in any case just plain bad manners. The organisers and KNCU go to a great deal of trouble to put together good water, the security and all the associated infrastructure - have the courtesy to pay the entry fee if you wish to take advantage of this.

Interschools Canoe Polo

Michaelhouse and St John's DSG emerged as top schools on Saturday at the Canoe Polo Tournament of the 2009 Capitol Caterers-Popes Canoe Centre Interschools Challenge.

The Girls Tournament was up first at 09h00 at the Varsity Pool in Pietermaritzburg with just three schools taking part. Epworth won the round-robin section from St John's DSG with the young and inexperienced Wykeham Collegiate team in third place. St John's puulled out all the stops in the final, combining well as a team to defeat their more fancied opponents.

Michaelhouse dominated the boys section of the competition from start to finish, winning both the round-robin and the finals. After a ding-dong battle in the round-robin Maritzburg College and Kearsney College were equal on points in second place, but Kearsney went through to the final with Michaelhouse on goal difference. Maritzburg College had a relatively easy win over Hilton College in the play-off for third and forth place.

The next event in the 2009 Challenge is the Flat-Water Slalom to be held at the same venue next Saturday. The girls regatta starts at 09h00 and the Boys at 11h00.

Medpharm Ngwenya Classic

Mark Mulder and Andrew Birkett battled it out for line honours at Ngwenya Canoe Club's Medparm Classic on Sunday with Mulder taking the final sprint from the Moto-X Wier to the finish line. "That was good fun, great to race in a full river again" said Mulder. Jason Graham won a similar tussel with Matt Collins for the third spot just over a minute later.

Lance Kime in seventh place overall won the junior category from Michaelhouse's Matthew Dean and Lembethe Canoe Club's Mzamo Zondi. Lembethe CC dominated the U16 category with Mmeli Cele and Paulos Shozi taking the top podium positions from Maritzburg College's Donovan Wewege.

'Toti paddlers took first and second places in the women's race with Tiffany Kruger edging out Michelle Eder by nine seconds and Robyn Kime, currently paddling for Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape, taking the third place. Epworth again dominated in the girls race with U16 Brittany Petersen winning from Monica Beghin ahead of St Annes/ Natal Canoe Club paddler Josie King.

A large field of over 540 paddlers enjoyed the splendid 12.5cumec water release from Henley dam courtesy of Umgeni Water, in this first big event of the 2009-2010 river racing calendar. The 16km B Class river race was run from 09h00 on Saturday on the Dusi course from Camps Drift to the Moto-X guaging Wier in Lincoln Meade. The uMsindusi Municipality have also been busy in the dry season revamping the shute on the YMCA wier just below Commercial road bridge. This proved a great improvement with no boats damaged on the shute at all.

Eric’s Canoe Shop Race!

Eric and Gary Clarke have been loyal and faithful members and sponsors of KCC for a number of years. And it was great to see such a positive turnout for the first night race of their popular Eric’s Canoe Shop Race. With only 20 pre-race entries the numbers soon swelled towards 200 paddlers.

Pinning his ears back and throwing down his challenge before leaving for the World Marathon Champs saw Hank McGregor demolish a very competent K1 field. With a bird eye view, his power and speed where astonishing. Ant Stott placed 2nd with Mark Mulder again showing his form with a solid 3rd! Wayne Wilson took 4th and 1st Vet. Steve Cohen disqualified himself for missing a turn.

Winning their age categories where top river paddlers and Dusi exponents Eric Hildebrand; Tim Cornish and Graeme Pope Ellis (Hank, Ant, Tim and Graeme are all multiple past Dusi winners) (Graeme, Ant and Hank are three of 5 KCC members who have won both Umko and Dusi – who are the other two we omitted!! None other than the Legend Ken Reynolds and …… sorry bird brained! ) the senior ladies where dominated by the girls form Toti but Sue Murrell took her age category for KCC!

Very special thanks to Eric and Gary Clarke from Eric’s Canoe Shop for their support.

Thanks also to:

Hansa
The Night of the Legends

What a special night: When Dennis (Denny) Stirling shook my hand with tears in his eyes and thanked KCC for bringing the history of KCC back to life it was all worth it!

As I listened to the stories and achievements of the many Legends that make up KCC’s membership I wanted to find a way to “bottle it” – to preserve the passion and the history that these members carry and the younger members create. The Honours boards will go some way to harnessing this history but it is the gathering of friends that keeps the stories alive and the history in the present.

On behalf of KCC I would like to sincerely thank all those people who made the night a success. If I do not name you specifically please understand that each and every person present on Thursday made the night what it was. A SUCCESS!

Firstly to Mark Conway and his wonderful team at CMH Group:
CMH has been a consistent supporter of KCC and immediately offered their backing to the Night of the Legends. Their generous sponsorship enabled us to pay for the fantastic Honours Boards. CMH can supply you with the car of your dreams so please consider one of their dealerships when you are in the market for a vehicle! Give Brad a call on 0837773730 and he will steer you to the dealership that meets your needs!

SAB and Hansa:
Sean Clancy at Hansa supported the Night of the Legends from day one and his enthusiasm was infectious. Thanks to Hansa for the majestic marquee, the bench and table sets and of course the wonderful amber kiss of the SAAZ HOP!

Other thanks
Geoff Dyer: For his time and efforts in gathering info and getting it onto the Honours Boards
Kevin Moran: For assisting with the gathering of the history of KCC
Ross Poacher: For organising the braai’s and the meat! And cooking till 11pm! And his helpers: Peter, Paul and Bruce!
Bar helpers: Angie and Nicky inside and Mark outside!
Helen: Your valued efforts in locating and contacting past members
Ernie: Your tireless efforts do not go unnoticed – Ernie worked all Thursday till 12pm then again most of Friday!
Our special guests: Andre Hawarden; Graeme Pope Ellis and Charlie Mason.
Founder member: Denny Stirling for the history and enthusiasm
Martin Lowenstein: For you enthusiasm and support in contacting people.
Merrill King: Great to see you at KCC – thanks for the support.
Patrick Macqunet: Precision Engraving and Framing – for the Honours Boards!
KCC Legends: All of you - it was wonderful to a see you all.

Yours sincerely

STATS ON THE NEW YMCA SHUTE - from Dave Still at DUCT

Bruce Baxter watched all the batches going over YMCA yesterday morning. His feedback was as follows

161 K2s shot successfully, 11 K2s swam and 10 portaged.

117 K1s shot successfully, 8 swam and 5 portaged.

1 K1 wrapped after swimming from ¾ of the way down.

Bruce says that those who did swim all ran into trouble further down – not on the chute itself. Nobody banged their boat’s nose on the chute or just below the chute.

I shot the weir three times on Sunday morning, twice in a K1 and once in a K2. I believe the better line is to be angling right to left, but you still want your nose to be approximately in the centre of the chute when you get to the bottom of the chute. The one time I shot in my K1 I deliberately went centre and aimed straight and it was fine. Obviously the water at that level just takes you through, so the main reason to be angling a bit left is to line yourself up for the lower part of the rapid.

Regards

Dave
